about me.
my name is matt.
I wish I could say I'm a recent graduate from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication, but that was more than two years ago now.
Now that I'm a real grown-up boy, I work at a local engineering consulting firm as a marketing coordinator, which means that I spend my days writing about steel trusses and precast concrete girders. I'm also on a team to redesign my company's website, which has really helped me polish my Web design skills in the safety of a corporate environment :)
In addition to my full-time job, I do some freelancing for Web100.com, a Web site that reviews the best of the Web. Lists are his favorite thing in the whole world, so I love that my work with Web100 consists almost primarily of creating lists. I played major roles in developing, organizing and writing the site's Twitter 100 and Viral Video 100 lists, which I'm super proud of. The Twitter 100 list was especially exciting to be a part of because it involved conducting research into the best apps, sites, tools, resources and guides involving Twitter.
Before making my sudden transition into the world of engineering marketing, I worked for the independent student newspaper at the University of Oregon, the Oregon Daily Emerald. I held many positions during my two years at the paper, including copy editor, copy chief and Pulse editor, which put me in charge of the paper's arts and entertainment section. I was in heaven. As Pulse editor, I geared the section toward easy reading and interactivity, and interviewed Internet innovators such as PostSecret creator Frank Warren and YouTube star Liam Sullivan.
I grew up in the Eugene area, in the neighboring town of Springfield. Amazingly, I have resisted the urge to "cowboy up" in the meth capital of the world. I have four boys, including a twin brother named Kurt. Kurt and I do not have psychic powers.
When I'm not at work, I'm either wasting my time online or trying desperately to get rid of the backlog of missed TV shows on my DVR. I also spend more time than I'm willing to admit re-watching all 10 seasons of "Friends" on DVD (I have thus far resisted the urge to name pets after "Friends" characters). I also read numerous entertainment and music blogs to keep up-to-date on all the important Hollywood headlines. My mind is like a steel trap for useless pop culture trivia, so I've got to keep it fresh somehow, right?
